JANE TRIUMPHS

My name is Jane Dubach-Macgeorge, I’m 45 years old, mother of three children and originally from England. The last 16 years of my life I have spent in the village Susten in the Valais
The topography and climate of the area lend themselves ideally to all kinds of outside sports - and this, throughout the year. Numerous paths, roads, tracks, slopes and trails are just waiting to be explored. This may sound like an advertising slogan taken from a tourist board website, but it is these characteristics that led me to start participating in sporting events.
One morning in September,1999, I set off equipped with rucksack and walking boots along the path from St Luc to Zinal and soon found myself in the midst of a race, surrounded by ambitious runners. Spurred on by the many spectators thinking I was actually participating in the competition, I began to run myself and ended up crossing the finishing line to the cheering crowds at what turned out to be the “Organiser’s Race of the famous Sierre-Zinal”. According to the motto “What they can do, I can do too,” I was determined to participate in the real Sierre-Zinal race the following August. This being one of the most renowned and notorious mountain races in the sporting calendar, with a distance of 31km and a climb of 1800 metres.
I’m 5ft 2 and weigh 115lbs. Initially I never paid much attention to the health aspects of doing such endurance sport. After 10 years of experience and a few minor hiccups, I’ve come to realise the importance of a healthy, well-balanced diet and in particular the importance of haemoglobin and effects of anaemia on performance. I discovered the hard way how a low ferritin count of 6, and iron count of 3.7 weaken the body. (Ferritin is a protein in the body that binds to iron). This can be remedied by intravenous shots of pure iron, a rather unpleasant but efficient therapy. However, now I prefer to keep the levels up with sufficient intake of red meat i.e. the local Valaisian dried meat or trochenfleisch.
